Wireless

Security:

Do you want a secure wireless network? You need to consider the following when configuring your router or access point. Note - these are advanced settings and you need to know a little about your router and devices on your network first to ensure compatibility.

Encryption types:

WEP (wired equivalent privacy) never use this setting as it is the lowest level of security offered

WPA (WiFi Protected Access)

WPA2, choose WPA2 when possible although some devices may not be compatible with this level of security so check your equipment specification.

Most ISP branded routers have WPA encryption setup as default now, so all you need to do is change the pre shared key (PSK). The PSK, use an alphanumeric pass phrase, don't use a word followed by 1234 or 000 etc. and try to make it a random 'key'. Try not to write it down, if you need to write it on your router using a suitable label or permanent marker - the ones for writing on CDs and DVD's are fine. You could also consider using MAC address filtering to prevent unknown devices connecting to the access point or router.

Change the routers standard password.

Wireless Range and Performance:

This is one major issue with wireless networks, there are many variables that can cause interference or loss of speed. Common issues are building materials, metal work, lead in paint even! Your microwave and cordless phones can even cause losses. There are ways around it and I'll briefly cover a few options in the next paragraph. ...More coming soon 10:47 15/07/10
