Windows Vista:

Slow Shutdown

If your Windows Vista machine is slow to shutdown it could be that the system is clearing the page file (virtual memory) file on shutdown.

These changes can be undone easily by repeating the steps and changing the value to its original.

You may want to print this for reference.

  1. Go to start and run

  2. or Win Key + R between CTRL and ALT

  3. keys

  4. Type regedit and choose

  5. In the registry editor browse through HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE then SYSTEM then CurrentControlSet then Control then to SessionManager finally MemoryManagement

  6. On the right hand side you should have a list starting with ClearPageFileAtShutdown this will be set to 1 double left click the key and a window will open change the value from 1 to 0

  7. Restart your computer.

On Windows Vista you can enable or disable features, this is found in the control panel. I disable the Windows DFS Replication service (although you may need this to keep files synchronized with other Vista Computers) Printing Services, (clear the box) and Remote Differential Compression. These are normally Vista to Vista computer networking options and can cause slow file transfers or faults with browse SMB shares on Vista. On Linux or UNIX you may need NFS option enabled.

As for the network, I tend to disable IPV6 and QOS, again check if you need these or if not disable them.
